Black Power leader Stokely Carmichael launched the Black United Front in January 1968 to unify the city’s diverse leadership. On April 4, Carmichael asked businesses near 14th and U streets NW to close out of respect for Dr. King. In a press conference the next day, he called on Black Americans to defend themselves from violence.
