As part of the work for the reconstruction of the National Library of Peru after it caught fire in 1943, Jorge Basadre assumed the direction of this institution, as well as the commission in charge of carrying out the works for the construction of a new building, and the procedures for the reception, purchase and management of the new collections.
Proposing a new internal management system for the library, as well as seeking the modernization of the institution, Basadre founded the School of Librarians of Peru. The school functioned from June 1944, although it was created by Supreme Decree in June 1943. For the creation of the curricula and the delivery of the courses, Basadre received the support of the North American Committee to Help the National Library.
