This picture is dominated by a unique colour scheme, based mainly on the cold tones of dark cobalt and ultramarine, harmonising with violets and greenish browns. Given the extremely suggestive description of the picture penned by Stanisław Lack, and in particular the passage on the role of colour in creating the image, this study approaches the final version of the picture both in the way of building the composition by means of short, expressive brushstrokes and the schematic treatment of the figure.
