Inaugurated in 1916, on the site of the former Mosteiro de S. Bento de Avé Maria (St. Benedict of Ave Maria’s Monastery), São Bento (St. Benedict) train station, designed by Marques da Silva, is distinguished by its French Academic style. The decorative tilework made by Jorge Colaço for the entrance hall (1905) consists of an extensive scheme that includes historical and ethnographic scenes as well as landscapes, alluding to the Douro and Minho railway lines. The upper frieze contains colorful panels depicting the evolution of transport. Allegories about progress fill the spaces between the arches of the main entrance.
