Worship in private chapels can take the name of whoever commissioned their construction or the name of the saint to whom the owners pay devotion. Consecrated to St. Francis of Assisi, this chapel is an example of this. Built by decision of Francisco Furtado de Azevedo Sottomayor (?-?), it is one of the most remarkable examples of private religious architecture in the municipality. This sumptuous Baroque work of art takes its style from its mentors: noblemen for whom worship not only means a form of atonement and redemption, but also a place of power and ostentation.
