Talavera plate

1600/1699

Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares de Sevilla

Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares de Sevilla
Sevilla, Spain

Talavera plate. In the centre is a lion pouncing among different plants. White enamel with the colours: blue, manganese, honey and green.

This plate is closely related with the factories in Talavera de la Reina and Puente del Arzobispo. Potteries have existed there since the middle ages, although they acquired fame with the works produced from the 1500s. It belongs to the polychrome series, in which the style is more like a painting than a drawing and the main elements of the scenes are full of theatricality and dramatic expression. The plate has a diameter of 30.5 cm and height of 6.5 cm.
