This is a valuable example of Kamachi ware, a type of ceramic produced in the Yanagawa domain. The delicate and shiny surface is created by rubbing charcoal powder into the unglazed earthen ware and then polishing. The bright patchy pattern on the smooth surface produces an elegant appearance.
Two inscriptions are engraved on the work; one is ‘方悦 (Hoetsu)’ which is the creator’s name seal in the shape of an eggplant, and the other is ‘九州土器之司 (Master of earthenware in Kyushu)’ which was a seal indicating excellent ceramics. Only three works, including this brazier, have been found with this honorable seal.
