The artist used to perfection the particular properties of the stone on which he painted this scene – its markings make up the shapes of clouds on which the angels are seated. In 1606 Teniers was elected the Guild Master of Painters in Antwerp. Interestingly, his son – also a painter – became internationally famous and married a granddaughter of Pieter Bruegel the Elder.
