LAZARO
Etching and engraving engraving, mm. 658x502
"P. P. Rubens pinxit "(bottom left); "B. to Bolswert sculp. et excudit "(bottom right); "Cum privilegijs Regis
Christianissimi, Serenissimae Infantis, et Ordinum Confederatorum "(in the center).
Inscriptions: "LAZARE, VENI FORAS. Joan. 11. "
The engraving is inspired by the painting of the same subject by Rubens, already at the Kaiser Friedrich-Museum in Berlin, n. 783,
destroyed in 1945, one of the most narrative paintings of the master painted around 1618-1620. Boèce at Bolswert has expanded
the composition, adding the groups of characters on the left and above the grave that have a more vein
popular. In the framework of Berlin, as in the Louvre sketch, the scene presented only the main characters, six
in the Berlin painting, seven in the Louvre sketch. The landscape has also been very developed with the big tree
in the middle and the cypresses on the left. L. van Puyvelde reports a sketch in grisaille, more refined than that of the existing Louvre
in the collection of Mme P. E. Weil in Paris, perhaps sketched in connection with the engraving of Boèce to Bolswert and
same dimensions (61x49 cm.). A copy on canvas of the engraving is at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam
