In 1955, Tadeusz Kulisiewicz visited Berlin for his solo exhibition. During his visit to the Berliner Ensemble Theatre, he watched the performance of The Caucasian Chalk Circle, a play by the renowned German playwright Bertolt Brecht. The play left a profound impression on Kulisiewicz, who immediately began translating his emotions onto paper — sketching during the performance on loose sheets of paper, which he later showed to Brecht. This marked the beginning of a friendship between the artists and a long-standing professional collaboration. The drawing presented here depicts a scene from The Caucasian Chalk Circle. The two walking male figures, dressed in long, wide robes with broad sleeves, occupy most of the composition. Both men are gently turned toward one another, engaging in conversation while gesturing. Their faces resemble masks. The absence of chiaroscuro modeling and the background, created with patches of gray, black, and white, give the composition a flat appearance.
