The Birds

The Fan Museum

The Fan Museum
London, United Kingdom

Ivory brisé fan painted on the recto with a menagerie of birds, including a pair of turkeys (at that time exotic creatures). Similar subjects can be seen in the work of Melchior d'Hondecoeter (1636 - 1695), a Dutch animalier painter.

The verso is painted en camaïeu with a rural landscape.

The lower part of the fan on both sides is painted with chinoiserie designs, including blue and white porcelain (imported to the Netherlands in quantity at that time).
