This work is the result of the union of two feelings that Ricardo knows very well: poetry and friendship. Because Ricardo Ugarte expresses himself poetically in any language, written, verbal, visual, pictorial and sculpturesque. In this sense he says: “I am a poet who writes with the graphics of my irons, by means of sculpture...” For this reason, it is no coincidence that this sculpture is dedicated to a poet for whom he had great affection; and through friendship he selflessly offers to place his work in the Campus of the Public University of Navarre, a gesture which we appreciate.
Ricardo Ugarte visited the campus analysing the environment and chose the place where La proa de la poesía (The prow of poetry) was going to be installed. He researched the form, the space, he calculated the proportion, he drew, he made models... until the poetry became iron; iron, sculpture; the sculpture, prow of the gaztelu from whose tower homage is paid to the visual poet Joan Brossa...
This work is within the Ugartian concept of sculpture as an aesthetic and spiritual construction. Formal simplicity is not necessarily equivalent to simplicity of experience. Unitary forms do not reduce relations. They order them. If the predominant, hieratic, nature of the unitary form works as a constant, all those detailed relations of scale, proportion, etc., are not suppressed. On the contrary, they are brought together more cohesively and indivisibly. Ugarte comprises the most important sculpturesque value, form; as a unification and integration of all other essential sculpturesque values, and he also knows how to integrate sculpture and architecture.
Ugarte’s opus provides a series of very specific characteristics to Basque sculpture, which serve to identify his works and recognise their quality which is known by all.
