The creation of the granite blocks used for the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge

Two photographs from the photo album owned by J.J.C. Bradfield, who designed and oversaw the building of the Harbour Bridge. Bradfield received the first doctorate of science in engineering awarded by the University of Sydney in 1924 with his thesis 'The City and Suburban Electric Railways and the Sydney Harbour Bridge'

These two photographs were taken in Moruya, New South Wales in 1926 and 1928, and show the process of "plug and feather". This refers to a non-explosive stone splitting technique. It uses a three-piece tool set to split stone, in this case granite. The granite in these photographs went on to be used in the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
