Postiglione, who was one of the most important interpreters of history painting during the 1840’s and 1850’s, depicts Coriolanus as he prepares to leave Rome in order to attack it as the commander of the Volsci. Persuaded by his mother Veturia and wife Volumnia, Coriolanus is finally convinced to save Rome, therefore reversing the fate of history.
