The Enthroned Madonna and Child Reposing on Top of Lions/ the Madonna from Skarbimierz

The polychrome sculpture carved in linden wood depicts a figure of the enthroned Madonna and Child – reposing on the backs of lions. The animals, diminished in size and trampled by the Madonna and Her Son, symbolise a defeated Satan. This exceptional work of art originated from the perished canopy altar from the church in Skarbimierz. The work reveals a formal link with the style of the figures which once adorned the interior of the Church of St Mary Magdalene in Wrocław.
