São Martinho (St. Martin) is one of the most famous saints in Portugal, and that shows in the number of parishes of which he is the patron saint. São Martinho de Anta, the birthplace of writer Miguel Torga, is one of those places. As mentioned in Memórias Paroquiais de 1758 (Parish Records of 1758), “The patron saint of this parish is Saint Martin, Bishop of Tours. The church has four altars, the largest one featuring the Holy Sacrament; on the rostrum of this altar, on the Gospel side, stands St. Martin, patron saint of this church; on the Epistle side, Saint Anthony of Padua” (CAPELA Et. Al., 2006: 432).
