The Garland Weavers

Walthamstow, London, United Kingdom

The figure of the woman on the left tending a rose tree is related to 'A Girl Tending Flowers' (also known as 'The Garland'), gouache signed EBJ and dated 1866, now in the collections of Hammersmith Public Library (Cecil French Bequest). This is the finest and most carefully finished of a series of six similarly occupied female figures planned as a set, to be called 'The Garland' but never completed in this form. They were adapted from designs for stained glass in the Green Dining Room of the South Kensington Museum (now the V&A) commissioned from Morris & Co' in 1866 as part of the scheme of the decoration for the room undertaken by the Firm.
