The George Street Gatehouse was constructed as part of the enclosure of Parramatta Park and formed part of the structures defining and reinforcing the identity of the Park. The architecture of the George Street Gatehouse is English Tudor style and testifies to the ongoing importance of English cultural influence on public works in New South Wales in the 1880s, particularly the then current fashions for the landscaping of major public parks.
