Charles Sydney Hopkinson was born in Cambridge, MA in 1869. He lived and worked in the area for much of his life.
A painter of portraits and landscapes, Hopkinson began exhibiting his work in the Boston area, as well as New York City, in the late 1890s.
In 1901, he traveled to Europe to study the work of a number of artists he admired. During his trip, he made stops in Spain, France, and the Netherlands.
After returning to the U.S., he opened a studio in 1906, where he continued to work until 1962.
Hopkinson went on to become a well known portraitist, painting over 800 portraits during his lifetime, including one of President Calvin Coolidge.
