Anton Hansch was a notable mountain landscape painter.

The first ascent of the Grossvenediger mountain took place in 1841. Hansch himself, who portrays the high mountain range here as a majestic spectacle, undertook extreme mountain tours in order to observe nature at these altitudes.
The tiny figures crouching on a cliff above a vertiginous abyss are lost amid the awe-inspiring view of the Grossvenediger landscape. The artist makes them witnesses of a prodigious experience. The fascination of the picture lies in the depth and vastness of the backdrop. Hansch, specialist in the depiction of the high mountain landscape with its impressive dimensions, has created a heroic landscape far exceeding mere topography.
