The artist, often called “the finest painter of horses”, expertly depicted the shape, character, age and movement of these animals. In order to perfect his knowledge of equine anatomy, Kossak often observed horses at local markets. This watercolour shows one such open-air market, set in the left-bank Praga district of Warsaw.
