The Ichiri-Han Sea Ferry, Arai, from the series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido (Gyosho edition)

Originally in Arai it was the Hashimoto post station on the coast that was used, but having been damaged by the Great Jogan Earthquake and a tsunami in the Meiou era, a new post station on the inland side became the station on the Tokaido. A checkpoint was also set up, and it was said restrictions on the movement of guns and women were strictly enforced.
