The female figure in the painting represents the personification of Poland as a suffering mother seeking a happy place on Earth for herself and her children. Dressed in a regal cloak whose red colour is a symbol of love, and at the same time of agony, she leans on a pilgrim’s staff which symbolises exile. Her little daughter holds manacles as a reference to the enslavement of the nation during the Partitions of Poland.
