The National Federation of Women’s Clubs of the Philippines was organized by the Women’s Club of Manila in 1921, at the height of the country’s struggle for independence from the United States. Even before the war, women’s clubs served to inspire women to participate in national development through charity and social work. These expectations continued during the war (and after). Thousands of children all over the country were accommodated for free in NFWC playroom classes “to keep mothers free to work inside or outside their homes.”
