This sculpture is based on Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Literary references are common in chryselephantine sculptors. In this case Roland Paris represents the devil. The extraordinary quality of the polychrome bronzes is surprising, an essential characteristic of the Austrian author. The formal characteristics of Art Deco are shown, as well as a great deal of symbolism in the devil's position.
