The pattern for the horizontal spring housing

Both the front and the rear trailing wheel sub-chassis have a horizontally aligned coil spring in a ventilated housing. The poil spring sections have also been cut out and wooden plugs for both ends have been turned for fitting. I have not been able to understand the function of this arrangement; it probably has something to do with keeping these chassis aligned stiffly with the main chassis.
