This sculpture of the Piedad has a special importance for the artistic heritage of Medina del Campo because it is one of the few testimonies that have survived of the disappeared Hospital de la Piedad and San Antonio Abad, an institution founded in 1454 by the Medinan bishop Fray Lope de Barrientos. . The invocation of the hospital suggests that this sculpture could have presided over the altarpiece of its church at the foot of which was the sepulcher of the founder.
