The Sadness of the Rain, Oiso, from the series the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido (Hoeido edition)

Travelers enter the station in the midst of a rainfall. A signpost and notice boards stand at the entrance. The round mountain on the right is Mt. Komayama, on the left is the pine forested coast— the Koyurugi Seashore mentioned in song. This work’s subtitle, “Tora’s Rain,” is an allusion to the tears of Tora Gozen, Soga Juro’s lover in the Tale of Soga.
