One of the most beautiful Gothic royal tombstones to be found in Europe – the sarcophagus of Prince Henry IV Probus (d. 1290), originated from the Church of the Holy Cross on the Island of Ostrów Tumski in Wrocław. The stone lid of the sarcophagus shows the Prince resurrected on Judgement Day, and the sides are decorated with the scenes of the funeral procession. A free-standing figure of that pretender to the throne of the Kingdom of Poland – also a knight and Prince of the Piast family – is clearly linked with the best examples of the classic Gothic sculpture from the French-Dutch borders and the Rheinland.
