Taipei, Taiwan

Having already represented Taiwan at the Venice Biennial Art Festival Yao Jui-chung is one of the most internationally renowned young artists participating in this exhibition. He is also a long time observer of the changing nature of Taiwanese society. The piece shown comprises a giant golden dinosaur with antenna and a wall covered in a photograph montage. As the dinosaur faces the wall, the antenna make contact with it. The wall itself is made up of a series of real and fantasy images representing modern Taiwan, mixed together and placed in golden frames; including lions in front of an abandoned factory, an exaggerated icon on top of a temple, dinosaurs in parks etc. Utilizing his detached observational skills the surrealist images Yao Jui-chung presents of Taiwan are resplendent, hinting at the intersection of decadence and magnificence, reality and imagination, savagery and civilization, blended together to form a "Savage Paradise".
