Capability Brown was skilled in using different types of trees to exploit the colours of their foliage, their outline form, and the texture of the bark so that that the individual trees play an important part in the garden, regarless of the season. Here, in May time, the bright green foliage of swamp cypress trees on the left can be seen to stand out against the darker foliage of lime, oak, beech and fir trees. The brightly coloured flowering shrubs below the trees are largely rhododendrons and azaleas, including the highly scented Rhododendron Luteum.
