The epic was written in 1876 after Morris’ lengthy study of the sagas, or medieval prose narratives, in the original Old Norse. During the 19th century he was known as an author, and for his designs for wallpapers, textiles, and carpets. In the 20th century, he began to be celebrated as a designer and a craftsman.
