In this painting of impressive dimensions, the biblical story known as "The tribute money" gets an update: Jesus and his disciples are depicted in 17th-century Gdańsk, and the words from the gospel of Matthew, stating that what is divine should be given to God and what is the Ceasar's should be give back to Ceasar, are directed to the city's citizens. The story is considered a reminder to pay necessary taxes, as Jesus did in the gospel and thus set an example for all others. The painting was commissioned by the City Council of Gdańsk and was meant to be presented in the Main Town Hall's Mooring Fee Chamber, where certain sorts of monies were collected. The unusual shape of the work is a reflection of vaulted ceiling of the Chamber where the painting was initially to be placed.
