Jan van Bijlert’s The Virgin and Child (c. 1625–1630) is a monumental masterpiece that brilliantly showcases the artist's unique blend of Utrecht Caravaggism and refined Classicism during the Dutch Golden Age.

In this captivating panel painting, the Virgin Mary is depicted with an air of timeless majesty, elegantly dressed in a gold-trimmed red silk gown and a sweeping sky-blue shawl. She tenderly holds the chubby Christ Child, who lovingly embraces her, yet both figures intriguingly avert their serene gazes outward to create a profound sense of dignified distance from the viewer. To elevate the imposing, majestic nature of the scene, the artist placed the subtly illuminated figures against a grand background featuring rich purple drapes and a classical pilaster. Characterized by its cool, silvery sheen and pale skin tones, the artwork is widely considered Van Bijlert’s most classicist Madonna. In fact, its striking classicist appearance and simple, focused composition led past scholars to mistakenly attribute the unsigned work to an unknown French master or the renowned Simon Vouet. Although Van Bijlert himself belonged to the Reformed Church, this explicitly Catholic subject highlights the enduring market demand for devotional imagery among Catholic patrons in the seventeenth-century Protestant Netherlands. Uniquely within his oeuvre, both mother and child are oriented towards the right, strongly suggesting that this painting may have originally been paired with a matching counterpart featuring Joseph or an adoring believer.

Today, this magnificent painting stands as one of the absolute highlights of Van Bijlert’s multi-faceted career, offering art enthusiasts a remarkable example of classical beauty and religious devotion in seventeenth-century Dutch art.
