The Virgin and Child and the young Saint John the Baptist are seen in a domestic interior. Saint John holds a reed cross and a scroll inscribed with words from his Gospel (New Testament, John 1: 29 and 36). The Christ Child holds a bird on a string.
The painting demonstrates Solario's Venetian training and is probably an early work.

- Artist Biography: Antonio de Solario probably trained in Venice. In his signatures he calls himself a Venetian but he is first certainly recorded in 1502 in Fermo. He probably worked in the region of the Marches (east central Italy) for several years. He may have visited England. He was known as Lo Zingaro ('the gypsy').
