These two panels, obviously conceived as part of a scenery of the Calvary, come from the chapel of the Holy Christ in the parish church of Santa Coloma in Centelles, where they flanked a Crucifix burnt during the Civil War. The chapel was paid by baron Lluís I of Centelles and was blessed in 1535. The author of the panels opted for some Italianate figures against a landscape of Flemish tradition, very rich in details; for the figures and the landscape, he took inspiration from engravings by other artists, something quite habitual. This features show a rather advanced state in the process experienced by Catalan painting along the 16th century: the progressive abandonment of Northern models in favor of Italian ones. Initially attributed by Josep Gudiol and Chandler R. Post to Joan or Perot Gascó, the more recent research agrees in defining a significant difference in these panels from other works documented or firmly attributed to the Gascó workshop.
