This seesaw-like “Chair Play II” symbolizes the perfect balance of power play.
Hong Kong's No. 1 designer and artist, Freeman Lau has won more than three hundred art and design awards. The “Chair Play” series is the brainchild of his many daily observations and years of thinking, inferring, and accumulating. The series is not only highly recognizable but also strikes a chord with the masses. People love it.
Freeman Lau believes the chairs are not only for sitting. They also carry the thoughts, appeal, status and power of each individual sitter. The intricate profile of “Chair Play II” embodies people’s pursuit of status and power. In the unnerving process of teeter totter, both sides need to communicate and make compromises before reaching a balanced state.
The exhibition space explores the piling up of thoughts as the theme with the help of visual illusion in recreating Lau’s study at Eslite Xinyi Store. Other than actually representing the creative process from conceptualization to production, an alternate third space has been created in the bookstore. The idea is to transform thoughts into creativity and in turn change the daily goings on, via the power of reading.
