Why Media Art? - Extending the range of art appreciation through various sensory channels
Media art is a genre born as the combination between art and media technologies. Today’s media artists do not simply harness technological advances; they take their inspiration from characteristics intrinsic to digital media, creating forms not existing before.
This exhibition was conceptualized as an experience of Lee Ungno’s art through all the senses. Its newly-devised mode of display invites the audience to interact with his work through haptic-touch, hearing, even by dancing, and in this way, the audience departs from the more traditional passive appreciation of art through sight, creating a more active sensory experience. Expansion within the senses leads to an expansion in the appreciation of the work, bringing about more colorful artistic experiences and interpretations. Through All Your Senses aims to provide an opportunity to communicate with Lee Ungno and his work through the sense that are normally used in everyday life, but not so often in a museum space.
As a convergence between Lee Ungno’s art and new media, this exhibition suggests a new methodology for exhibition display that is of increasing relevance in today’s artistic milieu, in expectation of visitors who will freely improvise their experiences of his work.
