African fashion makers are reviving ancient tie-dye techniques, which were also taught during the SUREP program. Tie-dyeing, an intricate and age-old tradition, involves dye resistance methods developed independently worldwide.
Originating in the eleventh century, African tie-dye gained commercial prominence in the twentieth century. SUREP participants utilized materials like hand gloves, various dyes, white cotton, sodium for color fastness, and caustic soda for their tie-dye creations.
