Tile with a painted image

Tile with glazed white background upon which a masculine personage is painted. More precisely, a bullfighter in a glade or sandy area in the act of bullfighting. The bullfighter’s apparel are a cloth cap, a white shirt with dark jacket and “taleguilla” trousers that, in this case are yellow and extend below the knees. The stockings are white and shoes black. The cape is blue and is depicted extended, held in both hands. During the 18th century there was an important revival of Valencian ceramic making that carried into the 19th century. It was represented by a great variety of themes painted on tiles, including individual and compound scenes of both small and large extent. The tiles were used to decorate various areas of the house; for example, staircases, baseboards, and kitchens. In the latter the themes were usually culinary or food-related.
