This draft was written between 1902 under the title 'The end of my career' as a follow up to Australian author Miles Franklin's first work, 'My brilliant career', written when Franklin was only 21.
Miles Franklin was an Australian author and feminist who wrote under her own name and pseudonyms including "Brent of Bin Bin", "An Old Bachelor" and "Vernacular.". This cover page attributes the work to "Miles Franklin's Understudy", and indicates that the preface has been written by one of the characters, Peter McSwat.
It wasn't until 1946, after numerous revisions over a thirty year period that it was accepted for publication under the title 'My career goes bung!'.
A note accompanying the draft held by the University of Sydney Library indicates that it is the only surviving early draft, the other being destroyed in a fire in Chicago during World War I. Franklin moved to the United States in 1907. The note also indicates that "This copy was found in an old trunk and had been preserved by Miss Franklin's mother.", and that the handwriting found in this draft is written in Frank's older style.
