Both pouches were made from popular imported Indian thin cotton fabric hand-painted with exquisitely vibrant madder red and Indian blue. The wooden pipe case at the top comes with carvings and mother-of-pearl inlay, while the one below is a Nagato-tsutsu. Nagato is the name given to lacquered paper-string weaving. These are for women and accessories like these were popularly known as memochi (lit. ‘carried by women’).
