The Ghonnella is a traditional Maltese headpiece and cloak worn by women, characterised by its distinctive arched shape. Typically made from dark colours of silk or cotton, it draped over the shoulders and extended down the back, with a structured frame that allowed it to maintain its unique silhouette. Worn for modesty and elegance, the Ghonnella symbolised Maltese cultural identity and craftsmanship, commonly seen in the 18th to early 20th centuries. It remains an iconic representation of Malta’s heritage and traditional dress.
