An installation sculpture created out of rusted tin titled The Traveller by the South African sculptor Jan van der Merwe (b.1958). Short Biography: Jan van der Merwe, a well-known South African sculptor, was born in 1958 in Virginia, in the Free State. During his childhood, he lived in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal and graduated high school in 1975. Continuing his education in Fine Arts, Van der Merwe received a National Diploma with distinction in painting in 1984 from Technikon Pretoria. Two years later, in 1986, he achieved a National Higher Diploma in Fine Arts from the same institution. Currently, Van der Merwe calls Pretoria his home and workplace, where he also serves as a senior lecturer in Fine Arts at Tshwane University of Technology. With a strong background in both architecture and Fine Arts, Van der Merwe has established himself as a notable figure in the South African art community.
