Archimedes’ works, first translated into Latin by William of Moerbeke in 1269, then by Iacopo of Cremona (or San Cassiano) in 1450, are also important for the mathematical foundations of perspective and painting. In the Riccardian codex, Piero della Francesca transcribes the Latin translation of San Cassiano in his own hand, carefully executing the drawings. Leonardo also looked for the works of Archimedes in several occasions, and in 1502 he mentioned in particular a codex “from Borgo a San Sepolcro”, which was probably Piero’s manuscript.
