As volcanoes broke out in the Eifel more than 10,000 years ago, lava, sand, pumice stone and ash were deposited. When combined they gave an excellent building material- tuff. Since tuff is usually very soft, it was cut into bricks since Roman times. It is still used as a facade covering to this day.
