The Catholic Monarchs, in order to unify the monetary circulation of the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon and -in turn- solve the chaotic situation that existed with coins Since medieval times, issued in June 1497 the Royal Pragmatics of Medina del Campo . The dukedom or "excellent of the pomegranate" was established as a new currency, a high-quality gold coin that followed European standards and circuLated in the main commercial centers of the old continent, being widely accepted in the financial circuits of the time. During the reign of Carlos I they continued to be minted in the name of the Catholic Monarchs until 1543, when this system was changed to the coin called "escudo" (spanish gold pistol).
