Tomie Ohtake was born in Kyoto (Japan), in 1913. She moved to Brazil in 1936, settling in São Paulo (SP). She started painting in 1951, taking classes with Keisuke Sugano. In 1953, she joined the artistic group Seibi, which brought together artists of Japanese origin and aimed to improve and disseminate their works. Her first solo exhibition took place in 1957 at the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art. In addition to painting, the artist also dedicated herself to engraving and sculpture. She carried out several public works, such as the “Monumento aos 80 anos da Imigração Japonês no Brasil” (Monument to the 80 years of Japanese Immigration in Brazil), in São Paulo (SP), the sculpture “Estrela do Mar” (Starfish), in Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), and panels to the Consolação Subway Station, in São Paulo (SP). She died in São Paulo (SP), in 2015.
