Dhiraj Choudhury was born in Bengal, at the time of British India. He began painting at a very early age. Choudhury taught at the College of Art, New Delhi. He had held about 80 solo exhibitions abroad, and in the 1970s, his works were exhibited in Geneva with those of Salvador Dali and Joan Miro.

His works are part of the prestigious collections at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Lalit Kala Academy, Rashtrapati Bhavan, embassies of Belgium, Australia, Netherlands, and Singapore.

Born in the times of India's freedom struggles, his works are narratives of socio-political situations of contemporary India. The dynamic choreography brings the characters to life on the canvas. His restless lines defy tradition. Choudhury's subjects and scenarios are provocative and agile and have a sharp sense of humour.
