Until the building of the Grey Street Bridge in 1932 (now called the William Jolly Bridge) and the Story Bridge (completed in 1940), the Victoria Bridge was the only inner-city river crossing. The 1897 bridge stood for seven decades when it was demolished to make room for the current structure, built in 1969.
